Bruce Wilbur Atkinson

April 2, 1920 - January 14, 2015

Guiding the mule pulled plow, scything wheat/weeds, raising chickens for eggs, surveying land, watching stars, comets and space objects, surfing the internet, Bruce Atkinson lived through a rapidly changing world.

On April 2, 1920, he was born the eldest of six children on his parents’ farm on Log Creek, attending the nearby country one-room school for two years before it was consolidated into Paoli Schools. Helping his father, Orange County Agent Ross Atkinson, with farm and educational work and his grandfather Wilbur Atkinson with their Springs Valley milk delivery route, he told many interesting stories. One experience was as a 13 year old traveling by train alone from Paoli to New Jersey with a small herd of cows. He slept in the caboose. During the trip a cow stepped on his suitcase squishing an orange and ruining his coat. After cattle delivery the cat buyer took him to a fancy New York City restaurant wearing suspenders minus coat.

WWII interrupted his Purdue education when he joined the Army Air Corps for pilot training. The six tallest people in his aviation class were selected and sent to Europe; focus of his training was changed to navigator/bombardier in the Pacific theater. After pilots were permitted to drop bombs, Bruce’s duties included front gunner in the bubble below the plane body. He was the most accurate navigator in his squadron. He completed 50 bombing runs.

In 1944 Bruce married Helen Padgett and finished his degree in agricultural engineering from Purdue in 1949. He was County Extension Agent at Corydon and then at English. His next career jump was to purchase the farm of his great-aunt and modernize the 1860s house. He raised egg laying chickens (boxes and boxes of peeping baby chicks delivered to the house hallway for overnight before the chicken house was heated enough), beef (always jumping fences and running all over just before church and school functions, pigs (which loved running away to original owners), corn, sorghum, trees in his efforts to find a profitable crop. After studying surveying under Hugh Burcklin, he was elected Orange County Surveyor.

Among his pubic honors, were Distinguished Flying Cross with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal with four Oak Leaf Clusters and Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal from World War II. He started the Busy Bees 4-H Club in 1953. In 2007, Bruce was honored as Indiana Farmer of the Year. He was a Paoli High School agriculture teacher, an EUB Church treasurer. He read the complete Encyclopedia Britannica in two years.

He loved to car-camp with family throughout the lower United States and Alaska (raccoons rubbing the bottom of hammocks) and later revisited Hawaii to show wife Helen sites he wrote her about during the war. He toured Europe when his son Mark was stationed there.

Bruce, son of Ross and Eva Epperson Atkinson, was preceded in death by his wife Helen and daughter, Susan; his sisters, Lois and Rosetta; and brother Don. He is survived by his brother James Atkinson of Paoli; sister Barbara Marquette of Virginia Beach, VA, children, Teresa Shuman, Pam Brown, Mark Atkinson and Brian Atkinson; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be conducted Jan. 18 at 2 p.m. at McAdams Mortuary in Paoli. Burial will follow at Ames Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be Jan. 17 from 3-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
