Ivan W. Atkins, age 102, passed away on Monday, October 27, 2025, at Spring Valley Meadows in French Lick.
He was born on November 15, 1922, to parents Ivan Willis and Esther (Dearborn) Atkins. Ivan was married to his childhood sweetheart, Dorothy (Mathers) Atkins, who passed away in 1994.
Ivan honorably served his country as a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and was among the few remaining Pearl Harbor survivors. During his distinguished military service, he was awarded three Philippine Conflict Service Stars for his dedication and bravery. Following his military service, he worked for many years as a carpenter.
In recognition of his lifelong service and contributions to his community and country, Ivan was presented with the Sagamore of the Wabash by the Governor of Indiana, one of the state’s highest civilian honors.
Survivors include his sons, Kenneth Atkins and Alfred Atkins; daughters, Frances Williams, Mary J. Goffinet, Shirley A. Atkins, Martha D. Enanora, and Rita Winnings; brother, Ollie Atkins; as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy, and his siblings: James Atkins, Louise Krueger, Maurice Atkins, Edward Atkins, Melvin Atkins, and Darwin Atkins.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 1, 2025, at Wickliffe Cemetery in Wickliffe, Indiana. McAdams Mortuary is honored to handle the arrangements for Mr. Atkins. For condolences, please visit www.mcadamsmortuary.com.
