Samuel Lee Holland, 92, of French Lick, died June 27 at Memorial Hospital in Jasper with his four
children by his side.
One of eleven children, he was born March 12, 1929 in Orange County to Samuel W. Holland and Sarah
Edith Denbo Holland. On August 13, 1949, he married Thelma Fern Apple. They were married for 71
years before she passed away last November.
Sam was a 1947 graduate of Paoli High School, a pipefitter, and a member of Youngs Creek Church of
Christ. He was deeply loved and revered by his family. A man with an unparalleled work ethic, he not
only helped to construct schools and hospitals as a pipefitter, but he raised cattle on his farm and
tended a huge garden. He genuinely enjoyed meeting new people, as well as nurturing old friendships,
but he was happiest when he was sharing a memory, a laugh, or a hug with his family.
He was preceded in death by his son Sammy Mark Holland, granddaughter Karolyn Slotten, and great-
grandson Jacob Fontanetta. His parents and all of his siblings preceded him in death. His brothers were
Wilbur, Charles, Gene, and Howard Holland. His sisters were Ruby Robbins, Amy Kaiser, Lottie Crowe,
Lois Holland, Mildred Pauline Holland, and Mary Seybold.
He is survived by his children: Barbara Holland Agan (Jeffrey) of Floyds Knobs, Kelly Lee Holland of
