Today we are saying goodbye to Scott Arden Boswell. He died peacefully in his home January 26th 2022. Scott was born the 25th of March 1946, son to Benedict and Mary Jean Boswell. He grew up as an army brat and moved twenty times by the age of 14 between locations including Japan, Germany, and Alabama. Half way through Purdue University, Scott signed up for service in the U.S. Army and rose through the ranks to become a chief warrant officer and a full helicopter pilot
Scott was sent to serve a tour in the Vietnam war. He spoke of the relationships he made, the beauty of the riverbeds as viewed from his helicopter, and the difficulties of flying the severely injured back for medical care.
After his tour, Scott returned to Indiana, where he served in the National Guard and began attending the Herron School of Art. At Herron, Scott became a great artist and met the love of his life, Linda Lee Disbrow. The two were married on August 31 st 1974. They went to Italy after graduating and began their new life together in Chicago upon their return.
In Chicago, Scott worked as a designer and carpenter, using his artistic sense to infuse beauty into all he worked on, including the building they purchased. Sons Jack and Jimmy were born here and family life began. Scott developed a deep love for the Blues, a proper Chicago style hot dog, and Cubs baseball while living in the city. For the rest of his life, it was rare that he would miss a chance to watch the Cubs play.
In the 90 ’s, the family moved to Paoli, Indiana, where Scott found a new community of friends. He loved bowling and brought his fierce left hook to many leagues and was an expert at finding reasons to go bowling. He participated in the Paoli Mennonite Fellowship community and volunteered countless hours working for others in service projects. And, he gravitated to those who sought to bring beauty to the world with art and music, bringing his deep appreciation to support them.
For 48 years, Scott has built and remodeled homes in the area. He is known for the quality of his work, but even more for the care he had for those around him. Quick to be there with a lending hand or to lend a tool. He was always looking out for others and had an unmatched generosity.
Scott cared deeply about his family. He loved watching and supporting Linda ’s work as a ceramic artist and teaching his sons his skills. He spoke often of his deep desire for his sons to be able to have good lives and delighted in visits from his two grandchildren, Oliver and Abigail and daughter-in-law Rebecca.
Seemingly everyone at the VA clinic knew and loved Scott after a 20 year battle with cancer. Somehow, he was able to maintain his spirit and share his appreciation for all those he met during this time.
He was a husband, a father, a friend, a provider, a veteran, and a man that lead a long full life. Scott will be sorely missed by us all. As a friend recently said to Scott “You won’t have to go work out in the cold anymore Scott.” Lets hope Scott is off with his late family and friends flying a helicopter to the moon… we know he always wanted to visit there. Have a good flight Scott. Sending love from us all.
