Gerald Moon Obituary

Gerald L. Moon, 71, of Mitchell, died Monday, July 5, at Indiana University Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

He was born Aug. 12, 1949, to John and Geneva Stroud Moon near Valeene. He married Teresa Kelly Brown in 1997.

Gerald attended Marengo High School and Paoli High School and graduated at Paoli in 1967. He enjoyed reunions with classmates from both schools. He was a member of Cross Roads Church of Christ near Valeene and has continued to occasionally worship with the congregation there while most recently worshiping regularly with the Central Church of Christ in Bedford.

Gerald earned an associate degree from Northwood Institute and a bachelor's degree in business from Indiana University. He was retired from Paoli Inc. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Gerald enjoyed weekly bowling as well as playing Euchre and Rook. He and Teresa also enjoyed goat farming. Gerald was a musician, having played music with family and friends since his youth. Most recently, he has been among the jammers who participate in the weekly Orange County HomeGrown Farmers' Market in Orleans. Gerald followed Indiana University basketball and national politics. He lived life to the fullest and had a gift for connecting with those he loved and bringing people together. His absence in that area leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.

Survivors include his wife Teresa; daughters Pamela (Jim) Cooper and April (Danny Brown) Butler; sons Jeremy Moon, Jon (Molly) Moon, Michael Bass, Matthew (Ana) Brown and Adam (Shannon Robertson) Brown; grandchildren Danielle (Casey Mullis) Cooper, Jessica (Brandon Turner) Cooper, Brittany (Trent Manship) Cooper, Nikki (Todd) Hammond, Josie (John McFarland) Moon, Landon Moon, Madison and Alayna Bass, and Atkyn, Westyn, and Alex Brown , and Maddie and Nate Robertson; great-grandchildren Jackson, Arielle, Colten, Gabby, Abby, Braydon, Waylynn and Brooks; brothers Raymond Moon, Roger (Valerie) Moon, Denny (Tammy) Moon and Kevin (Doris) Moon; brother-in-law Glennis (Mary Kay) Hess; sisters-in-law Judy Simpson and Sherry Moon, and several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. He also is survived by Teresa's brothers and sisters and their families: Dan (Wendy) Kelly of Lafayette, Paul (Donna) Kelly of Orleans, Jim (Linda Reynolds) Kelly of Orleans, Alan Kelly of Orleans, Annette (Kenny) Straney of Vine Grove, Ky., Gerald Kelly of Lafayette, Edward (Charlotte) Kelly of Chester, Montana, Terence (Sheri Lancaster) Kelly of Mitchell, Lawrence (Lana) Kelly of Lafayette, Cecilia (Jason) Beehler of Indianapolis and Martha (Brent Watson) Davis of Bedford.

Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Donald, Marvin and Curt, sisters Esther Hess and Margie Madden; brother-in-law Carson Madden; Teresa's parents, John B. and Marie T. Kelly; his nephew Doug Apple and his beloved nephew Justin Moon, with whom he shared his Aug. 12 birthday. 

Funeral services for Gerald Moon will be Thursday at 11 a.m. at the Paoli Church of Christ. Visitation will be at the church 3-8 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. until time of the service on Thursday. Burial will follow in the Oak Grove Church of Christ Cemetery near Hardinsburg. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions should be made to the Justin Moon Memorial Scholarship at the Orange County Community Foundation.
